Intent
At St Cuthbert’s school we strive to ensure all children are given opportunities to access, create and flourish in an artistic environment. To produce children who have an enjoyment of creating and participating in all areas of Art and Design to the best of their own ability.
At St Cuthbert’s we want our children to
- Develop and imaginatively extend ideas from a starting point throughout the curriculum.
- Collect information, sketches, resources and present ideas imaginatively.
- Use quality materials to enhance ideas.
- Spot potential in unexpected results as work progresses,
- Experience a variety of Artist’s work. Using comparison and contrasting language to appraise them.
- Comment on Art works with a fluent grasp of visual language.
- Enhance the curriculum by using visitors, visits and extra-curricular activities.
Implementation
In conjunction with our partners in the Bishop Hogarth Trust, the Art and Design curriculum is developed through skills taught throughout the key stages. These themes are to ensure that there are a variety of curriculum drivers that cover the content of the National Curriculum. These include, painting , drawing, printing and collage, sculpture and an appreciation of Artists.
Each of these curriculum drivers include a hierarchy of vocabulary that will ensure the children have the words they need to voice opinions, discussions and observations around all of their Art work.

Curriculum Impact
When our pupils leave St Cuthbert’s, we will have ensured that they have developed a creative identity and basic artistic skills that they will be well equipped to use within further education and their life experiences. The majority of pupils will achieve age related expectations in Art and Design Technology and will become confident in their abilities as artists. They will have developed firm foundations in art and design technology and will be well placed to make good progress at Key Stage 3.
