Intent

At St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School we intend for all our children to have the very best Science Curriculum. We want all children to develop a love and passion for science where everyone achieves. Through hands on experiences and a natural inquisitive nature they will explore and be encouraged to show curiosity of the world. The Science Curriculum that is delivered at St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary will be age appropriate and follow the National Curriculum Programme of Study. It has been designed carefully by The Bishop Hogarth Trust around threshold concepts which is the key knowledge required for learners to progress in their understanding. SEND pupils will be supported with resources that will allow them to make connections in a topic and through many adapative strategies. It encourages self-belief, resilience, respect and confidence in the children.

Pupils will be taught the knowledge, skills, concepts and understanding to become confident independent learners with high aspirations for the future. While following each Programme of Study pupils will also be ‘working scientifically’ to carry out experiments, use equipment correctly and deepen their understanding of concepts through questioning and discussion. Through carrying out a range of investigations they will also learn to observe, make predictions, solve problems, record results and draw conclusions.

Implementation

As a school within Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, we teach a schemeof work designed by a transition team of our primary school staff working with subject specialists from our secondary schools. It is organised into topics and year groups and designed around the statutory requirements for Primary

Science and gives full coverage of the National Curriculum. The curriculum has been designed to ensure clear progression, in the acquisition of knowledgearound threshold concepts which has a clear end point. Key scientific language is  modelled and taught throughout lessons enabling children to be familiar with and use vocabulary accurately. Teachers are also encouraged to plan trips and visitors to enhance our children’s learning experience whenever possible.

Impact

  • Pupils will follow a scheme of work across the Key Stages that has progression,consistency and continuity. Each teacher knows what is coming next and what their pupils are striving for.
  • Pupils have a clear understanding of the biological, chemical and physical world around them. This will eliminate misconceptions and move each child forward.
  • Children will use increasingly sophisticated language to identify, describe and explain.
  • Science books will have clear progression and demonstrate the pupil’s acquisition of key knowledge a topic, ‘end points’.
  • Pupils will be given opportunities throughout each unit to investigate and experiment.
  • Children are becoming more independent in science which involve completing pupil lead investigations.
  • The majority of pupil will achieve age related expectations in Science and clear progress will be evident in their Science work and assessments
